Walking in Nerja & the Sierra Almijara

Difficulty Level : Easy/medium     Average Altitude : 600m     Average Daily Walking Distance : 9.8 km

  Introduction
Nerja from the Balcon de EuropaThe pretty Mediterranean coastal town of Nerja lies at the foot of The Sierra Almijara, Andalusia, where the mountains plunge straight into the sea, creating sheltered sandy coves and a spectacular rugged coastline, quite unlike any other in the Malaga region of Andalucía. It is the perfect place for a first walking holiday abroad or for all the family, as you can enjoy the peace of the mountains during the day and a bit of life in the evening. The walking is relatively easy and at the end of each day you have the Mediterranean sea or the hotel pool for a refreshing dip. Up in the mountains you follow old mule tracks that lead you though dramatic gorges and lush pine forests with towering craggy peaks overhead. The sierras are home to the endemic Spanish Ibex along with eagles and vultures which are frequently seen. In the evening the town of Nerja is ideal for sampling the local cuisine and you can join the locals and tourists who gather on the "Balcon de Europa" which juts out into The Mediterranean Sea and has a colourful atmosphere with street entertainers and stalls from local artists.

Hi Nicola, just a few lines to let you know that we had a great holiday last week, everything went like clockwork. The hotel was fine and the walks were spot on, no problems with following the instructions, the same applies to the trip to Granada. The village had some good restaurants so the only problems we had were which one to choose for our evening meals.
